In particular, the Titleist Vokey SM5 Tour Chrome Wedge S Grind Dynamic Gold Steel 7.0 Right 58.0 is just the wedge to help you hit it close and lower your golf scores.

This wedge feature a spin milled (SM) groove system and was designed by master craftsman Bob Vokey based on decades of research and collaboration with the world’s best golfers.

Features

The Titleist Vokey SM5 Tour Chrome Wedge 7.0 is a customizable wedge available for men and women and comes in a right handed or left handed option. The wedge can be configured by choosing your loft and sole grinds. Tour proven bounce and sole grind options allow you to fit your swing style, shot technique, and course conditions.

The loft refers to the angle of the face of the club with respect to the shaft. Available lofts for the SM5 range from 46 to 60 degrees. The higher the degree of loft a wedge has, the higher the trajectory of the ball it hits.

A pitching wedge, used as you approach the green, has the least loft at 45 to 50 degrees. Next is the sand wedge at 54 to 58 degrees that is best for hitting balls out of sand traps or bunkers. The gap wedge is one of the most versatile wedges, useful for both pitching and chipping around the green – it has approximately 50 degrees or more loft.

Your gap wedge should have a loft in between that of your pitching wedge and sand wedge. Finally, there is the lob wedge with 58 to 60 degrees, generally used by advanced players for a short, controlled shot that stops on the green quickly. As you build your set of wedges, consider having a 4-degree loft gap between each.

This SM5 comes with multiple high performance sole grinds for almost any swing type or turf condition. Based on player input and feedback, these wedges are available in six different sole grinds categorized into low, mid, and high bounce to fit any swing style or game condition.

Another high quality feature of the SM5 is the new spin milled TX3 groove system. This is the third generation of Vokey’s tour extreme scoreline that produces maximum spin for improved trajectory and distance control. The TX3 system is a set of 17 individually cut and inspected grooves that continue to push the conforming limits of effective edge radius for increased backspin.

The grooves undergo a high frequency face heat treatment for durability and longer spin retention over the life of the wedge. Grooves are available in two different performance configurations. The grooves in the 46 to 54 degree lofts are deeper and narrower, while grooves in the 56 to 62 degree lofts are wider and deeper.

Pros

  • More compact and balanced profile
  • Increased groove durability
  • 100% inspection of grooves
  • Made of 8620 carbon steel for a longer life with less bend
  • Compact profile with rounded toe and shorter blade
  • Cleaner look with multiple finish options and ample room for personalization

Cons

  • Too many grinds with a complicated labeling system
  • To get the right combination of loft, grind and bounce for your game you need to be fitted by a professional

Comparison

The Titleist SM5 is comparable to Titleist SM6 and the Callaway Mack Daddy 3. All three of these wedges offer customization options that allow you to design the best wedge for your game.

The SM6 is the new generation of the SM5 and stands out because of its advanced TX4 groove system. It has improved distance gapping with a progressive center of gravity. Similar to the SM5, it has shot versatility with its custom fit to swing type and course conditions.

The Mack Daddy 3 is advanced in its shaping and design. Like the SM5, this wedge was tweaked based on tour feedback and is balanced with a high toe profile and a moderately straight leading edge. The back of the wedge is weighted to allow repositioning for better shots, especially out of deep rough.

Verdict

The SM5 line of wedges is suitable for nearly any golfer. The multiple configurations of bounce and sole grind options provide more ways to shoot lower scores for all levels of players in any conditions.

The next step up... the SM6. Watch the video below to see how proud Bob Vokey is of the set that took about 10 years to develop.

This is probably the first set that we've done where I looked at it and went, alright these are pretty damn good!
