Callaway Mack Daddy 3 Chrome S-Grind Wedge[/easyazon_link] is a completely customizable club. Begin by selecting a men’s or women’s club and then a left or right handed club. From there you can configure flex and loft of the club.

The shaft material is steel which allows more vibrations up the shaft to your hands providing feedback. An experienced golfer can use this feedback to determine what they may have done right or wrong by the feel of the swing and impact.

The steel-shafted club also carries weight that is helpful if you have a high swing speed. The weight may fit your swing tempo better and allow for more control. As part of the shaft selection, you can pick the flex you desire from regular, S300, to stiff.

An important part of the design of the wedge is the Progressive Groove Optimization. This is a 3 groove package precision milled into the face of the wedges. The grooves optimize spin for each different loft while creating a smoother spin transition from your irons to wedges.

The grooving starts with a 30V which is used for the pitching and gap wedges (42 to 54 degrees) to put spin on shots that require a steep angle. For sand wedges (54 to 58 degrees), the groove pattern is called a 20V and works best for full shots and bunker shots. The last type of groove system is called 5V which uses wider grooves for lob wedges (60 to 65 degrees) to provide more control on shots out of the rough and around the green.

The customization option allows you to choose lofts from as low as 46 up to 60 degrees. Loft is the angle of the face of the club with respect to the shaft.

The more loft a wedge has, the higher the trajectory of the ball it hits. Most players choose a configuration with a 4-degree loft gap between each of their wedges. Typical lofts for specialized wedges are as follows:

  • Pitching wedge – 45 to 50 degrees
  • Sand wedge – 54 to 58 degrees
  • Gap wedge – 50 degrees or more, your gap wedge should have a loft in between that of your pitching wedge and sand wedge
  • Lob wedge – 58 to 60 degrees, generally used by advanced players for a short, controlled shot that stops on the green quickly

Another unique aspect of this wedge is the distinct S-grind. The grind is the shape and contour that is ground into the bottom of the wedge. An appropriate grind can provide shot making opportunities around the greens. The S-grind is the most versatile of the three different grinds offered by Calloway.

It’s an excellent option for a wide range of course conditions. It can handle normal, firm, or soft turf conditions as well as moderate to sweeping angle swings for any type of shot.

Comparison

Similar wedges include the Titleist SM6 Tour Chrome Wedge and the Callaway Mack Daddy 2. Both have spin similar to the Mack Daddy 3, but both of the Mack Daddy’s have higher bounce options.

The SM6 wedge boasts a progressive center of gravity. This design creates a perfect alignment with the impact location specific to each loft.

As the impact point raises so does the loft of the wedge helping to control distance and trajectory. With this wedge it does not matter where on the face you hit because distance does not change with the trajectory.

The Mack Daddy 2 is the predecessor of the Mack Daddy 3, so they are very similar in design and function. The MD 3 has a wider sole than the MD 2 providing an extra level of forgiveness without loss of control.
